Question - Formula for bitcoin mining profitability that factors increasing difficulty over time

Hi guys,
I'm making some basic trackers in Google Sheets for my cloud mining earnings. A profitability calc that factors in cloud mining fees and, ideally - difficulty increases.
My question is what is this formula, and what data does it need - to modify Bitcoin produced over the next 12 months assuming that the difficulty steadily increases at a rate comparable to the past 12 months (~478% / ~1.3% daily). What is the formula that allows for a sliding scale over time?
Say I was trying to figure out where 7.73TH/s would get me at: D1 W1 M1 M2, 3, 4, 5 etc. Y1
Any help is much appreciated, cheers.

How to get an expected profitability when mining ravencoins?

Input: a miner's hashrate.
Output: an expected profitability of mining RVN (like whattomine does).
Questions:
  1. Is there a formula that allows me to calculate an expected profit by a miner's hashrate?
  2. Is there a formula to get a network hashrate by a given network difficulty? Something similar to this answer, but for a Ravencoin.

The White Dragon : A Canadian Dragon Portfolio

Alright guys, Ive been working on this for a while and a post on here by a guy describing his portfolio here was the final kick in the ass for me to put this together. I started writing this to summarize what Im doing for my friends who are beginners, and also for me to make some sense of it for myself
Hopefully parts of it are useful to you, and also ideally you guys can point out errors or have a suggestion or two. I'm posting this here as opposed to investing or canadianinvestor (blech) because they're just gonna tell me to buy an index fund.
This first section is a preamble describing the Canadian tax situation and why Im doing things the way that I am. Feel free to skip it if you dont care about that. Also, there might be mistake regarding what the laws are here so dont take my word for it and verify it for yourself please.
So here in Canada we have two types of registered accounts (theres actually more but whatver). There is the TFSA "Tax Free Savings Account", and RRSP "Registered Retirement Savings Account"
For the sake of simplicity, from the time you turn 18 you are allowed to deposit 5k (it changes year to year based on inflation etc)in each of them. That "room" accumulates retroactively, so if you haventdone anything and are starting today and you are 30 you have around 60k you can put in each of them. The prevailing wisdom is that you should max out the TFSA first and you'll see why in a minute.

TFSA is post tax deposits, with no capital gains or other taxes applied to selling your securities, dividends or anything else. You can withdraw your gains at any time, and the amount that you withdraw is added to the "room" you have for the next year. So lets say I maxed out my TFSA contributions and I take out 20k today, on January of next year I can put back in 20k plus the 5 or whatever they allow for that year. You can see how powerful this is. Theres a few limitations on what is eligable to be held in the TFSA such as bitcoin/bitcoin ETFs, overseas stocks that arent listed on NYSE, TSX, london and a few others. You can Buy to Open and Sell to Close call and put options as well as write Covered Calls.

The RRSP is pre-tax deposits and is a tax deferred scheme. You deposit to lower your income tax burden (and hopefully drop below a bracket) but once you retire you will be taxed on anything you pull out. Withdrawing early has huge penalties and isnt recommended. You are however allowed to borrow against it for a down payment as a first time home buyer. The strategy with these is that a youngperson entering the workforce is likely to be in a fairly low tax bracket and (hopefully) earns more money as they get older and more skilled so the RRSP has more value the greater your pre-taxincome is. You can also do this Self Directed. Its not relevant to this strategy but I included it for the sake of context.
Non registered accounts ( or any other situation, such as selling commercial real estate etc) is subject to a capital gains tax. In so far as I understand it, you add all your gains and losses up at the end of the year. If its a positive number, you cut that number IN HALF and add it to your regular pre-tax income. So if I made 60k from the dayjob and 20k on my margin account that adds up to 70k that I get taxed on. if its a loss, you carry that forward into the next year. Theres no distinction between long term and short term. Also physical PMs are treated differently and I'll fill that part in later once I have the details down.
The reason why all that babble is important is that my broker Questrade, which isnt as good as IB (the only real other option up here as far as Im aware) has one amazing feature that no other broker has: "Margin Power"
If you have a TFSA and a Margin account with them, you can link them together and have your securities in the TFSA collateralise your Margin account. Essentially, when it comes to the Maintenance Excess of the Margin Account QT doesnt care if its in the TFSA *or* the Margin!
You can see how powerful this is.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So as you can tell by the title, a lot of this is heavily inspired by Chris Cole's paper "The Allegory of the Hawk and the Serpent". You can read it here: https://www.artemiscm.com/welcome#research
Between it, his interviews and my mediocre options skills at the time my mind was blown. Unfortunately I didnt know how to do the Long Volatility part until after the crash in March but I've since then had nothing but time to scour the internet and learn as much as I could.
The way I interpret this isnt necessarily "what you should have right now", but what abstracted model they were able to backtest that gave them the best performance over the 90 years. Also, a lot of my portfolio I already had before I started trying to build this.
As such my allocations dont match the proportions he gave. Not saying my allocations are better, just showing where they are at this time.
I'm going to describe how I do Long Volatility at the end rather than the beginning since the way *I* do it wont make sense until you see the rest of the portflio.

Physical PMs 22%
I'm not sure wether he intended this to be straight up physical gold or include miners and royalty streaming companies so I will just keep this as physical.
I consider Silver to be a non-expiring call option on gold, so that can live here too. I am actually *very* overweight silver and my strategy is to convert a large portion of it to gold (mostly my bars) to gold as the ratio tightens up.
If youre into crypto, you can arguably say that has a place in this section.
If an ETF makes sense for part of your portfolio, I suggest the Sprott ones such as PHYS. Sprott is an honest business and they actually have the metal they say they have. If you have enough, you can redeem your shares from the Royal Canadian Mint. The only downside is that they dont have an options chain, so you cant sell covered calls etc. Simple enough I suppose.
One thing to bear in mind, there is a double edged sword with this class of assets. They're out of the system, theyre nobody's business but your own and theres no counter party. That unfortunately means that you cant lever against it for margin or sell covered calls etc. You can still buy puts though (more on that later)

Commodity Trend (CTA) 10%
https://youtu.be/tac8sWPZW0w
Patrick Ceresna gave a good presentation on what this strategy is. Until I watched this video I just thought it meant "buy commodities". A real CTA does this with futures also so aside from the way he showed, there are two other ETFs that are worth looking at.
COM - This is an explicit trend following ETF that follows a LONG/FLAT strategy instead of LONG/SHORT on a pile of commodity futures. So if they get a "sell" signal for oil or soybeans they sell what they have and go to cash.
COMT- Holds an assortment of different month futures in different commodities, as well as a *lot* of various related shares in producers. Its almost a one stop shop commodities portfolio. Pays a respectable dividend in December
If you want to break the "rules" of CTA, and include equities theres a few others that are also worth looking at
KOL- This is a coal ETF. The problems with it are that a lot of the holdings dont have much to do with coal. One of them is a tractor company. A lot of the companies are Chinese so theres a bit of a red flag.
Obviously Thermal Coal, the kind used for heating and powerplants isnt in vogue and wont be moving forward...but coking coal is used for steel manufacturing and that ain't going anywhere. The dividend is huge, pays out in December. A very very small position might be worth the risk.
Uranium- I'm in URA because thats the only way for me to get exposure to Kazatoprom (#1 producer), which is 20% of the holdings. The other 20% is Cameco (#2 producer)and then its random stuff.
Other than that I have shares in Denison which seems like its a good business with some interesting projects underway. I'm still studying the uranium space so I dont really have much to say about it of any value.
RSX- Russia large caps. If you dont want to pick between the myriad of undervalued, high dividend paying commodity companies that Russia has then just grab this. It only pays in December but it has a liquid options chain so you can do Covered Calls in the meantime if you want.
NTR- Nutrien, canadian company that was formed when two others merged. They are now the worlds largest potash producer. Pretty good dividend. They have some financial difficulties and the stocks been in a downtrend forever. I feel its a good candidate to watch or sell some puts on.
I'm trying to come up with a way to play agriculture since this new phase we're going to be entering is likely to cause huge food shortages.

EURN and NAT- I got in fairly early on the Tanker hype before it was even hype as a way to short oil but I got greedy and lost a lot of my gains. I pared down my position and I'm staying for the dividend.
If you get an oil sell signal, this might be a way to play that still.

Fixed Income/Bonds 10%

Now, I am not a bond expert but unless youre doing some wacky spreads with futures or whatever... I dont see much reason to buy government debt any more. If you are, youre basically betting that they take rates negative. Raoul Pal of Real Vision is pretty firm in his conviction that this will happen. I know better than to argue with him but I dont see risk/reward as being of much value.
HOWEVER, I found two interesting ETFs that seem to bring something to this portfolio
IVOL- This is run by Nancy Davis, and is comprised of TIPS bonds which are nominally inflation protected (doubt its real inflation but whatever) overlayed with some OTC options that are designed to pay off big if the Fed loses control of the long end of the yield curve, which is what might happen during a real inflation situation. Pays out a decent yield monthly
TAIL- This is a simpler portfolio of 10yr treasuries with ladder of puts on the SPX. Pays quarterly.

Equities 58% (shared with options/volatility below)
This is where it gets interesting, obviously most of this is in mining shares but before I get to those I found some interesting stuff that I'm intending to build up as I pare down my miners when the time comes to start doing that.
VIRT- I cant remember where I saw this, but people were talking about this as a volatility play. Its not perfect, but look at the chart compared to SPY. Its a HFT/market making operation, the wackier things get the more pennies they can scalp. A 4% dividend isnt shabby either.
FUND- This is an interesting closed end fund run by Whitney George, one of the principals at Sprott. He took it with him when he joined the company. Ive read his reports and interviews and I really like his approach to value and investing. He's kind of like if Warren Buffett was a gold bug. Theres 120 holdings in there, mostly small caps and very diverse...chicken factories, ball bearings all kinds of boring ass shit that nobody knows exists. Whats crucial is that most of it "needs to exist". Between him, his family and other people at Sprott they control 40% or so of the shares, so they definitely have skin in the game. Generous dividend.
ZIG- This is a "deep value" strategy fund, run by Tobias Carlisle. He has a fairly simple valuation formula called the Acquirer's Multiple that when he backtested it, is supposed to perform very well. He did an interview with Chris Cole on real Vision where he discusses how Value and Deep Value havent done well recently, but over the last 100 years have proven to be very viable strategies. If we feel that theres a new cycle brewing, then this strategy may work again moving forward.

I want to pause and point out something here, Chris Cole, Nassim Taleb and the guys at Mutiny Fund spend a lot of effort explaining that building a portfolio is a lot like putting together a good basketall team. They need to work together, and pick up each others slack
A lot of the ETFs I'm listing here are in many ways portfolios in and of themselves and are *actively managed*. I specifically chose them because they follow a methodology that I respect but I can't do myself because I dont have the skill, temperament or access to.
The next one is a hidden gem and ties into this. I'm not sure how much more upside there is in this one but man was I surprised.
SII- Sprott Inc. I *never* see people listing this stock in their PMs portfolios. A newsletter I'm subscribed to described this stock as the safest way to play junior miners. Their industry presence, intellectual capital and connections means that they get *the best* private placement deals in the best opportunities. I cant compete with a staff like theirs and I'm not going to try. I bought this at 2.50, and I liked the dividend. Since then they did a reverse split to get on the NYSE and like the day after the stock soared.
When it comes to mining ETFS I like GOAU and SILJ the best. None of their major holdings are dead weight companies that are only there because of market cap. I dont want Barrick in my portfolio etc.
SGDJ is a neat version of GDXJ.
Aside from that my individual miners/royalty companies are (no particular order)
MMX
SAND
PAAS
PGM
AUM
AG
MUX
RIO- Rio2 on the tsx, not rio tinto
KTN
KL
Options/Volatility: varies
So this is where we get to the part about options, Volatility and how I do it. I started out in the options space with The Wheel strategy and the Tastytrade approach of selling premium. The spreads and puts I sell, are on shares listed above, in fact some of those I dont hold anymore.
Theres tons of stuff on this in thetagang and options so I wont go into a whole bunch (and you shouldnt be learning the mechanics from me anyway) but theres one thing I want to go over before it gets wild.
If I sell a Cash Secured Put, from a risk management perspective its identical to just buying 100 shares of the underlying security. You are equally "Short Vol" as well, it just that with options
its a little more explicit with the Greeks and everything. But if I use my margin that I was talking about earlier, then I can still collect the premium and the interest doesnt kick in unless Im actually assigned the shares.
But if I sell too many puts on KL or AG, and something happens where the miners get cut down (and lets be real, they all move together) my margin goes down and then I get assigned and kaboom...my account gets blown up
So what I need to do, is balance out the huge Short Vol situation in my portfolio, be net Long Vol and directly hedge my positions. Since the overwhelming majority of my equities are all tied to bullion this is actually a very easy thing to do.

Backspreads
https://youtu.be/pvX5_rkm5x0
https://youtu.be/-jTvWOGVsK8
https://youtu.be/muYjjm934iY

So I set this up so the vast majority of my margin is tied up in these 1-2 or even 1-3 ratio put spreads that *I actually put on for a small credit*, and roll them every once in a while. I run them on SLV, and GDX.
I keep enough room on my margin so I can withstand a 10% drawdown before it sets off the long end of the spreads and then I can ride it out until it turns around and we keep the PM bull market going.
Theres another cool spread I've been using, which is a modified Jade Lizard; if already hold shares, I'll sell a put, sell a covered call, and use some of the premium to buy a longer dated call. Ive been running this on AG mostly.
I have a few more spreads I can show you but Im tired now so it'll have to wait for later.
As I said multiple times, I do intend to trim these miners later but now isnt the time for that IMO. I'm also monitoring this almost full time since I have an injury and have nothing better to do until I heal :p

Fun Fact: This is the closest a Millionaire Makers drawing thread will get to Christmas Eve! Comment to enter, and let’s make someone’s Christmas while we still can! [Drawing Thread #37]

OBLIGATORY EDIT: Thanks for the Silv'a, kind and generous stranger. For your generosity, have a video of Silver, from the hit video-game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, detailing the glorious benefits silver has on the Reddit culture! Thank you. (I hope you liked the joke.)

Santa Claus is coming! …and apparently it’s a 100,000 people in a red trench coat.

Edit: There are three deleted comments. The drill is to run the code again at 3:00 UTC, with a trial run before and after.
Quick Announcement:
On December 28, 2018, one week after this drawing, I will conduct a survey to help determine this subreddit’s direction. Additionally, the moderation team will unveil a new Discord server at the same time for our subscribers to discuss the subreddit and the drawing. Here are some questions you can expect (updated):
  • What day of the month would you like the /MillionaireMakers drawing to be held?
  • Should the code be further streamlined to acquire comment IDs at a faster and just pace? (Context: There's new code that can be used to prevent further cases of cheating, but it also changes the process.)
  • What is the best cryptocurrency blockchain to choose the winner from?
  • Should the [Drawing Thread] post's format be revamped in the future?
  • Should there be monthly or seasonal announcements the Monday of the [Drawing Thread]'s week?
If you would like to see something specific change over here at /MillionaireMakers, please click here! Your comments will help determine any additional questions the moderation team should ask the subscribers.
TL;DR: Leave a comment on this thread. A random user will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire. You are welcome to spread this thread via upvoting, telling friends and family, and sharing on social media! If you'd like to be reminded to donate to the winner by RemindMeBot, click here!
What is this, anyway?
Three years ago, a Redditor posted an idea in /Showerthoughts that speculated the fact, if a million people picked a certain Redditor and all donated just $1, they would have the power to make someone a millionaire.
This subreddit is an embodiment of that showerthought, and the monthly drawings are the attempts to make it happen.
We need your help to keep this running, which amounts to only $1 a month to make someone's day. In the long term, that’s $120 every decade, which is a much more affordable price than other expenses. How does it work? Below, you will find an explanation on entering, rules to keep in mind, the selection, and other important things to note.
How to enter:
  • REQUIRED: Leave only one (1) top level comment in reply to this thread! Replying to other comments will not count. It is highly recommended to comment "RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /millionairemakers", which will remind you via PM to donate.
Important Rules:
  • Only ONE top level comment per person (replies and subsequent-level comments aren't included), but feel free to reply to other comments. Making duplicate top level comments may result in exclusion from entering. Go to me to ensure you don't accidentally double comment.
  • If, by any chance, you do double comment, delete any extra duplicates ASAP, ideally before the thread is locked in 24 hours, as any chosen draws found to violate this will not be eligible to win, and will be banned from the subreddit.
  • Your account must be older than 30 days with some amount of activity. Throwaway accounts with very minimal activity will also not be eligible. This is to prevent multiple entries from the same person.
How will the winner be picked and how can you donate?
  • After 24 hours, this thread will close, and the method of selection will begin.
  • While attempts to make the selection method similar to 2017’s have been performed, it still varies from the original. For an example from a prior drawing, see [Draw #36]. For archival purposes, please click here for the original selection method.
  • Method's TL;DR: Your number is assigned by sorting the comments by old, so the first commenter will be 1, and the list of comments will be publicly released. The subreddit then waits for a randomly generated block (a string of numbers) from Bitcoin's blockchain, after a preselected date and time, and calculates the winner using a formula described in the posts mentioned above.
  • Comment IDs are downloaded at 2:00 UTC, three hours following the thread being locked. There will be a trial run prior to the time listed, one at the time listed, and one trial run thirty minutes after. If it is shown that the deletion of comments has occurred between any of the trial runs, or technical difficulties, the retrieval of the comments will be delayed by an hour, following the same procedures. For [Drawing Thread #37], this has occurred, and retrieval of comments will be delayed to 3:00 UTC.
  • While not necessary, to determine if you are on the list, please go to your comment and save it. The comment ID is what gets recorded and selected, which looks like this: e3yxpj4.
  • The user who created the winning comment will be informed of their luck and will provide any information necessary for their chosen payment methods (mods will help set this up if needed).
  • The generous Reddit community donates to this lucky person, hopefully making some worthy soul a millionaire! A donation table will be stickied to the winner’s post, giving users the freedom in how they donate.
  • The lucky Redditor follows up with a thank you within the next days, revealing to the community exactly how much was raised and thanking their generosity.
Reminders
  • Take the time you have available now to setup your PayPal, Square Cash, and Google Wallet account, and/or cryptocurrency wallets. (Note: Some services may not be available depending on where you reside.)
  • To buy any cryptocurrencies, you may use Coinbase for purchases using your bank account.
  • To store cryptocurrencies, there are many accessible wallets, and if you win, you will be guided on which ones to download. For Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, it’s recommended to use the Electrum and Electron Cash wallet for Mac, Linux, and PC.
  • Please try your best to donate a $1, no matter who wins. Every single dollar, cent, anything really counts, so please take the effort to remember and go through with it.
  • If you want to be reminded to donate, please comment "RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /millionairemakers".
  • Spread the word! The more people who participate, the better this gets for everyone! There has been a correlation between this subreddit making it in /all and an increase in donations.
  • Try to cross-post to relevant subs, and upvote. There is a correlation between reaching /all and the amount of donations for the winner. (Please don't spam other subs though. We're not trying to make any enemies here.)
  • If you are under 18, please talk to your parents to get their consent to participate and use their help to setup a PayPal account.
MOST IMPORTANTLY
Remember, this is about generosity, making history, and coming together to make someone's life better. It takes three minutes to donate a bit to the winner, whether you're well off and want to donate a couple bucks, or going through tough times and can only donate a few pennies. Every cent counts.
Note about legality: This is NOT a lottery. You don't have to pay to enter. No prizes are given away directly by the moderators of this subreddit (the moderators will never even touch your donations; this is done voluntarily). As for gift taxes, according to the IRS they're generally paid by the donor, and any donations under $14,000 is not taxable.
If a lone $1 can get you a Dollar Tree-worthy present, imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can go invite your family to a Disney World vacation, invite friends without hesitation, or put up Christmas decorations!
One million dollars can be enough to make someone’s Christmas. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.
LET'S GIVE THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING!
A Christmas delight,
With people dear, near, and cheer.
The winner’s tonight!

OBLIGATORY REDDIT GOLD AND PLATINUM EDIT: Please stop. You keep making me lose my editing virginity. Thanks though, kind strangers, but still stop. I don't deserve this.
SECOND EDIT: I also added a bullet point on downloading the list of comment IDs. For a quick rundown, I rescheduled it to 5:00 UTC, if you would like to replicate this for yourself.
THIRD EDIT: There has been a discrepency. Comments will be retrieved again at 6:00 UTC.
FOURTH EDIT: I overslept and now I am depressed. Comments will be retrieved again at 13:00 UTC.

Merry Giving of Thankfulness!

#Be_a_Trader!

Greetings from MCS, the derivatives trading platform where traders ALWAYS come first.

The global gold price continues to rise. The gold price ended at $2049.30, up 1.4% ($28.30) per ounce for December delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange on the 5th local time. For the first time in history, the gold price hit the $2,000 per ounce mark and settled to the $2,050 mark in a day. It is an unprecedented rise in gold price with an increase during 4 consecutive trading days and hit record highs 7 times in the last 8 trading days.
The cryptocurrency market also showed strong increases last night. As of 20:00 UTC, the bitcoin price was 11693.51 dollars, up 3.96% from the previous day, and Ethereum and Litecoin rose 3.17% and 3.29%, respectively. Also, Bitcoin dominance recorded 60.8%.
With the rise of international gold prices, traders around the world are naturally watching the bitcoin price. Today, we will share how you can realize profits through the trading of bitcoin derivatives, the perpetual contracts.

💡 "Bitcoin Derivatives Perpetual Contract Trading is a Trade of Contracts."
Understanding contract trading is the most difficult part for existing stock traders and traders who trade cryptocurrency spots when trading perpetual contracts. Let's take a closer look at the example of trading stocks and bitcoin derivatives below.

https://preview.redd.it/6xuv85sdnjf51.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=81c2362ea79efd3f38ec0aef9b277b301c140b47
In the case of stocks, the money required to buy a stock of $5,000, you pay $5,000. If you buy one share of the stock for $5,000 and then sell the stock when the stock reaches $6,000, you realize a profit of $1,000.

https://preview.redd.it/v1nmsgqenjf51.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8b763b72c527a8e422baa3f4c9e7c44b4245a91
As mentioned above, contracts are traded in the case of perpetual contracts. However, the value of each contract is roughly the same for each derivatives exchange. With MCS's BTC/USDT perpetual contracts as an example, 1 contract is worth 1 USDT.

💡 "1 Contract = 1 USDT? How do I trade that with Bitcoin?"
Assuming the price of bitcoin is 10,000 USDT, how many contracts can I buy on the BTC/USDT perpetual contracts with 1 BTC? As each bitcoin is worth 10,000 USDT, 10,000 contracts worth 1 USDT can be bought or sold.
So the question here, if the price of bitcoin is 20,000 USDT and I have 1 BTC, how many BTC/USDT perpetual contracts can I buy from MCS?
It would be 20,000 contracts. The easy way to figure this out is with this formula. "present value / contract value of bitcoin". In this formula, if the present value of bitcoin = 20,000 USDT and the contract value = 1 USDT, if substituted, it becomes 20,000/1 = 20,000 contracts.

💡 "Now I understand the concept of contracts, so how do I make profits??"
Bitcoin perpetual contracts have a long position that predicts the price increase and a short position predicting the price decrease. This revenue calculation part is well explained in the help center of MCS.

🎯 "You don't have to be excellent to start, but you have to start to be great." - Les Brown
If you are a trader who wants to realize economic freedom through cryptocurrency trading, I recommend the trading perpetual contracts on MCS. Firsts are always difficult and feels unfamiliar. However if you adapt and build up your know-how, it is like acquiring a new weapon that others do not have. If there are traders being lazy in learning due to the difficulty, MCS provides online customer support 24/7, so if you do not understand something, please get help from the MCS support team.

This is it from the margin trader Hedgehog.
*Bitcoin derivatives trading is a high-risk, high-return investment, so it is recommended to fully understand all related matters before trading.

Traders ALWAYS come first on MCS.
Thank you.

It's Good Friday, and a millionaire is about to rise from the ashes (figuratively)! Comment to enter! [Drawing Thread #41]

Praise thy!

TL;DR of the TL;DR:
In Case You Missed It:
  • So I'm going to be unavailable for the next few hours. Quick notes, this thread will close at 0:00 UTC (8 PM ET) due to me being late by thirteen minutes. As a side effect, comment retrieval will occur, centered at 3:00 UTC (11 PM ET). Not good enough, I was not able to get online before that. 4:00 UTC (12 AM ET) it is! 5:00 UTC (1 AM). Apparently, Pydroid need a repository plug-in, whatever that means. Hope I stay up for that long.
  • The /millionairemakersmeta discussion thread is up, and be welcome to donate to the past winner.
  • UNDER CONSTRUCTION, though can't guarantee it'll get repaired.
TL;DR:
Leave a comment on this thread, replies won't count. A random user will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire. You are welcome to spread this thread via upvoting, telling friends and family, and sharing on social media!
  • [If you'd like to be reminded to donate to the winner through PM via the RemindMeBot, click here!](UNAVAILABLE)
In the long term, that’s $120 every decade, which is much more affordable than other expenses.
That's it!
Important Rules:
  • Only ONE top level comment per person (replies and subsequent-level comments aren't included), but feel free to reply to other comments. Making duplicate top level comments may result in exclusion from entering. Go to me to ensure you don't accidentally double comment.
  • If, by any chance, you do double comment, delete any extra duplicates ASAP, ideally before the thread is locked, as any chosen draws found to violate this will not be eligible to win, and will be banned from the subreddit.
  • Method's TL;DR: Your number is assigned by sorting the comments by old, resulting in the first commenter being 1. The list of comments will be publicly released for the community to verify per their own accord.
There will be an official run at the time listed. If it is shown that there are any technical difficulties, the retrieval of the comments will be delayed by an hour, following the same procedures.
  • While not necessary, to determine if you are on the list, please go to your comment and save it. The comment ID is what gets recorded and selected, which looks like this: e3yxpj4.
  • The Draw is held at 16:00 UTC the Sunday after comments have been downloaded, unless stated otherwise. Using the Bitcoin blockchain, the third block yet to be mined will be used to select a winner.
As for gift taxes, according to the IRS, they're paid by the donor, and any donations under $15,000 is not taxable.
If a lone $1 can get you stuff, imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can get stuff, stuff, and stuff!
One million dollars can help do things. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.
Let's make an egg-cellent millionaire!

You are formally invited to make a millionaire, this fabulous October. Please comment, enter at your liege. [Drawing Thread #35]

Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger. I actually didn't notice because my inbox self-imploded with over 10,000 messages.
Also, reports go to the mod team. If you really, REALLY, have an issue with this subreddit, please message the admins.
I also added a bullet point on downloading the IDs of comments.

Holidays are coming, the first of which is Halloween. As a side note, don't enter a stranger's home. I'm not your mom, though.

TL;DR: Leave a comment on this thread. A random user will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire. You are welcome to spread this thread via upvoting, telling friends and family, and sharing on social media! Reminder to enter the next drawing by RemindMeBot.

Foreword
The consensus mechanism is one of the important elements of the blockchain and the core rule of the normal operation of the distributed ledger. It is mainly used to solve the trust problem between people and determine who is responsible for generating new blocks and maintaining the effective unification of the system in the blockchain system. Thus, it has become an everlasting research hot topic in blockchain.
This article starts with the concept and role of the consensus mechanism. First, it enables the reader to have a preliminary understanding of the consensus mechanism as a whole; then starting with the two armies and the Byzantine general problem, the evolution of the consensus mechanism is introduced in the order of the time when the consensus mechanism is proposed; Then, it briefly introduces the current mainstream consensus mechanism from three aspects of concept, working principle and representative project, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of the mainstream consensus mechanism; finally, it gives suggestions on how to choose a consensus mechanism for blockchain projects and pointed out the possibility of the future development of the consensus mechanism.

The picture above shows 14 relatively mainstream consensus mechanisms summarized by a geek Hasib Anwar, including PoW (Proof of Work), PoS (Proof of Stake), DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake), LPoS (Lease Proof of Stake), PoET ( Proof of Elapsed Time), PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance), SBFT (Simple Byzantine Fault Tolerance), DBFT (Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance), DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph), Proof-of-Activity (Proof of Activity), Proof-of- Importance (Proof of Importance), Proof-of-Capacity (Proof of Capacity), Proof-of-Burn ( Proof of Burn), Proof-of-Weight (Proof of Weight).
Next, we will mainly introduce and analyze the top ten consensus mechanisms of the current blockchain.
》POW
-Concept:
Work proof mechanism. That is, the proof of work means that it takes a certain amount of computer time to confirm the work.
-Principle:
Figure 7 PoW work proof principle
📷
https://preview.redd.it/xupacdfc4db51.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b6994641f5890804d93dfed9ecfd29308c8e0cc
The PoW represented by Bitcoin uses the SHA-256 algorithm function, which is a 256-bit hash algorithm in the password hash function family:
Proof of work output = SHA256 (SHA256 (block header));
if (output of proof of work if (output of proof of work >= target value), change the random number, recursive i logic, continue to compare with the target value.
New difficulty value = old difficulty value* (time spent by last 2016 blocks /20160 minutes)
Target value = maximum target value / difficulty value
The maximum target value is a fixed number. If the last 2016 blocks took less than 20160 minutes, then this coefficient will be small, and the target value will be adjusted bigger, if not, the target value will be adjusted smaller. Bitcoin mining difficulty and block generation speed will be inversely proportional to the appropriate adjustment of block generation speed.
-Representative applications: BTC, etc.
》POS
-Concept:
Proof of stake. That is, a mechanism for reaching consensus based on the holding currency. The longer the currency is held, the greater the probability of getting a reward.
-Principle:
PoS implementation algorithm formula: hash(block_header) = Coin age calculation formula: coinage = number of coins * remaining usage time of coins
Among them, coinage means coin age, which means that the older the coin age, the easier it is to get answers. The calculation of the coin age is obtained by multiplying the coins owned by the miner by the remaining usage time of each coin, which also means that the more coins you have, the easier it is to get answers. In this way, pos solves the problem of wasting resources in pow, and miners cannot own 51% coins from the entire network, so it also solves the problem of 51% attacks.
-Representative applications: ETH, etc.
》DPoS
-Concept:
Delegated proof of stake. That is, currency holding investors select super nodes by voting to operate the entire network , similar to the people's congress system.
-Principle:
The DPOS algorithm is divided into two parts. Elect a group of block producers and schedule production.
Election: Only permanent nodes with the right to be elected can be elected, and ultimately only the top N witnesses can be elected. These N individuals must obtain more than 50% of the votes to be successfully elected. In addition, this list will be re-elected at regular intervals.
Scheduled production: Under normal circumstances, block producers take turns to generate a block every 3 seconds. Assuming that no producer misses his order, then the chain they produce is bound to be the longest chain. When a witness produces a block, a block needs to be generated every 2s. If the specified time is exceeded, the current witness will lose the right to produce and the right will be transferred to the next witness. Then the witness is not only unpaid, but also may lose his identity.
-Representative applications: EOS, etc.
》DPoW
-Concept:
Delayed proof of work. A new-generation consensus mechanism based on PoB and DPoS. Miners use their own computing power, through the hash algorithm, and finally prove their work, get the corresponding wood, wood is not tradable. After the wood has accumulated to a certain amount, you can go to the burning site to burn the wood. This can achieve a balance between computing power and mining rights.
-Principle:
In the DPoW-based blockchain, miners are no longer rewarded tokens, but "wood" that can be burned, burning wood. Miners use their own computing power, through the hash algorithm, and finally prove their work, get the corresponding wood, wood is not tradable. After the wood has accumulated to a certain amount, you can go to the burning site to burn the wood. Through a set of algorithms, people who burn more wood or BP or a group of BP can obtain the right to generate blocks in the next event segment, and get rewards (tokens) after successful block generation. Since more than one person may burn wood in a time period, the probability of producing blocks in the next time period is determined by the amount of wood burned by oneself. The more it is burned, the higher the probability of obtaining block rights in the next period.
Two node types: notary node and normal node.
The 64 notary nodes are elected by the stakeholders of the dPoW blockchain, and the notarized confirmed blocks can be added from the dPoW blockchain to the attached PoW blockchain. Once a block is added, the hash value of the block will be added to the Bitcoin transaction signed by 33 notary nodes, and a hash will be created to the dPow block record of the Bitcoin blockchain. This record has been notarized by most notary nodes in the network. In order to avoid wars on mining between notary nodes, and thereby reduce the efficiency of the network, Komodo designed a mining method that uses a polling mechanism. This method has two operating modes. In the "No Notary" (No Notary) mode, all network nodes can participate in mining, which is similar to the traditional PoW consensus mechanism. In the "Notaries Active" mode, network notaries use a significantly reduced network difficulty rate to mine. In the "Notary Public Activation" mode, each notary public is allowed to mine a block with its current difficulty, while other notary public nodes must use 10 times the difficulty of mining, and all normal nodes use 100 times the difficulty of the notary public node.

-Representative applications: CelesOS, Komodo, etc.

》PBFT
-Concept:
Practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm. That is, the complexity of the algorithm is reduced from exponential to polynomial level, making the Byzantine fault-tolerant algorithm feasible in practical system applications.
-Principle:
Figure 9 PBFT algorithm principle
📷
https://preview.redd.it/8as7rgre4db51.png?width=567&format=png&auto=webp&s=372be730af428f991375146efedd5315926af1ca
First, the client sends a request to the master node to call the service operation, and then the master node broadcasts other copies of the request. All copies execute the request and send the result back to the client. The client needs to wait for f+1 different replica nodes to return the same result as the final result of the entire operation.
Two qualifications: 1. All nodes must be deterministic. That is to say, the results of the operation must be the same under the same conditions and parameters. 2. All nodes must start from the same status. Under these two limited qualifications, even if there are failed replica nodes, the PBFT algorithm agrees on the total order of execution of all non-failed replica nodes, thereby ensuring security.
-Representative applications: Tendermint Consensus, etc.

Winter is coming, get ready to overthrow the establishment! (I mean, make a millionaire.) [Drawing Thread #38]

It's cold. (I've never watched an episode of Game of Thrones, please enjoy the reference if it makes sense! If it doesn't, it's treason, then. And if I made anyone cringe, I'm sorry. )

In Case You Missed It:
  • Method's TL;DR: Your number is assigned by sorting the comments by old, resulting in the first commenter being 1. The list of comments will be publicly released for the community to verify per their own accord.
As for gift taxes, according to the IRS, they're paid by the donor, and any donations under $14,000 is not taxable.
If a lone $1 can get you ice cream (I did eat a Frosty this week), imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can start a loan for a new vehicle, raise money for a TV, or pay gas bills to stay warm!
One million dollars can keep someone from the pain of the frost and cold. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.
Let's heat a millionaire!
The cold of the night,
Whether sweaters or letters,
Today, set things right!

Can someone explain the Bitcoin Cash Difficulty Algorithm to me?

I understand that in Bitcoin (Core) it works as follows:

difficulty = new_difficulty_target / difficulty
this new number is usually estimated by clients and it changes every 2016 blocks as to aim for 10 minutes between each block.

I know not much about the fork(s), other than the differing size blocks. I remember reading about a different algorithm that BCH used as to not cripple the forked chain when waiting for difficulty retargets because it was (correctly) anticipated to have a lower hashrate. Since it had a lower hashrate, it could have been possible for the chain to be stuck attempting to mine a block too high in difficulty for the current hashrate, effectively stopping the fork.

Can anyone help explain this algorithm to me and is it still implemented or did the codebase change back to the 2016-block retarget?

Thanks
EDIT 1: As of 2017: Bitcoin Cash uses 'Median Time Past' to determine if the difficulty will be readjusted. It looks at the current block and the 'MTP' of the past 6 blocks, and if the time difference is greater than 12 hours, the difficulty will become easier. I believe it is a 20% adjustment. Median Time Past is the median of the last 11 blocks.

EDIT 2: Thank to u/jonald_fyookball I was pointed to the Electron Cash implementation [here](https://github.com/Electron-Cash/Electron-Cash/blob/mastelib/blockchain.py)

I'm still working through this as I'm not much of a programmer, but I think this here is the relevant code:
def get_median_time_past(self, height, chunk=None): if height < 0: return 0 times = [ self.read_header(h, chunk)['timestamp'] for h in range(max(0, height - 10), height + 1) ] return sorted(times)[len(times) // 2] # # ... other code ... # not sure how to format as it is in the middle of a function # bitcoin cash EDA # Can't go below minimum, so early bail if bits == MAX_BITS: return bits mtp_6blocks = self.get_median_time_past(height - 1, chunk) - self.get_median_time_past(height - 7, chunk) if mtp_6blocks < 12 * 3600: return bits # If it took over 12hrs to produce the last 6 blocks, increase the # target by 25% (reducing difficulty by 20%). target = bits_to_target(bits) target += target >> 2 return target_to_bits(target)
I am interested to see the implementation of this and learn more about it so I will (probably) be adding more to this post as time goes on as a reference for myself and anyone else who wants to know.

Gobler's Fantasy Consistency Rankings Week 8

WEEK 8 CONSISTENCY RANKINGS HERE
Hey all. I posted these last week, but didn't quite get the traction I had hoped for due to difficulties with the automod.
In short, this tweet from last season regarding the consistency between Tyreek Hill and Anotonio Brown inspired me to create data for player consistency. For those too lazy to click the link, Tyreek Hill and Antonio Brown were both averaging around 21.5 points in PPR leagues through week 13 of the 2018 season. However, how those two players went about getting those points differed greatly. Antonio Brown was fairly consistent throughout the season. With his lowest score being 14.6 and his highest being 31.4, AB’s line graph is fairly flat and consistent - at least in comparison to Reek’s. Tyreek Hill’s graph, on the other hand, is all over the place. As the top twitter comment suggests, “Tyreek Hill [was] Bitcoin.” Hill would explode for monster games some weeks, but then score in the single digits in others.
This got me thinking. Why isn’t there more emphasis on consistency? Every year before drafts begin, every other comment is about “minimizing risk” by drafting safe and consistent players. We are taught to value the James Whites of the world, but then blow large quantities of our FAAB on players like Will Fuller.
Using my 9th grade math skills, we can better objectively view players through consistency using standard deviation. With this information, we can gather a better understanding of which players are truly consistent, as opposed to simply looking at season averages. Furthermore, we can also use this data to help us make more accurate predictions in the future.

Standard Deviation (SD)
Standard deviation is a measurement of variation or dispersion in a given set of data. The smaller the standard deviation, the closer the data is to the mean (average).
For example: Let’s say that Lamar Jackson has an SD of 6.97 fantasy points, and Jameis Winston has an SD of 7.74 fantasy points. Clearly, 6.97 is less than 7.74. From this, we can say that Lamar’s performances have been closer to his expected value (average) more so than Jameis’s performances have been to his expected value.
68-95-99.7 Rule
In a normally distributed set of data, we can expect that 68.26% of values are plus or minus one standard deviation from the mean, 95.44% of values are within plus or minus 2 SD, and 99.7% are within plus or minus 3 SD.
Using Lamar as an example again, we would say that about 68% of Lamar’s performances are between ±1 SD from his average of 25.1 fantasy points. Since Lamar’s SD is 6.97, we can say that 68% of his games are between 18.13 (25.1 - 6.97) and 32.07 (25.1 + 6.97) points.

Disclaimer: I did not include ± 3 SD from mean since ± 2SD covers almost all data with 95.44%. Also, I don’t think you need me to tell you that there is a 99.7% chance that a player like Lamar Jackson’s score falls between something like 46.0 and 10.0 points.
Coefficient of Variation (CV)
If you’re only going to take one thing from this post, this is the most important part. Coefficient of variation is a measurement of consistency. It’s simply the players Standard deviation divided by their respective average. It’s a good way to compare results between multiple sets of data, like fantasy football players. This just shows us the relationship between a player’s SD and their average. More specifically, it shows us how close players are to their overall season average, which is considered their “expected value.”
THE SMALLER THE NUMBER = MORE CONSISTENT. For example: Let’s say Christian McCaffrey has a CV of .450 and David Johnson has a CV of .526. From this, we can say that CMC has been more consistent and is more often performing closer to his season average on a weekly basis than DJ is.

Things to Note
Q: What scoring format is this for?
A: .5 PPR scoring and standard scoring for QBs, D/STs, and Ks.

Q: Why is player ________ not on this list?
A: To provide a more accurate depiction of each players respective seasons, I first sort the players by average points/game. Then, I only include the top 20 scoring players for QBs, top 40 for RBs, top 40 for WRs, top 20 for TEs, and top 20 for Ks. But because I’m a sweetheart, and D/STs are more about matchups, I include all 32 D/STs. If your player isn’t on the table, then they didn’t make the cut this week. I also took the liberty of removing players that are on IR for the remainder of the fantasy season, haven't played most games (with the exclusion of Brees), or aren't on teams anymore @AB84.

Q: What formula for standard deviation did you use?
A: Credit to u/YoureNotMom. On last weeks post, this Bachelor of mathematics educated me on why using the population standard deviation was not as statistically valid as using the sample standard deviation. In his words: "We don't know each QB's true perimeters. Imagine we're in the Matrix and everyone's every characteristic is quantified. Two such parameters would be your mean and standard deviation for both passing yards and passing TDs (for 4 total). As a computerized NPC, you will always produce outcomes derived from those parameters. You could then calculate the mean and standard deviation of fantasy points based on the yards and TD figures.
However, we're not in the matrix, so we don't know a QBs "true" mean and SD for his fantasy points. We only have this year's sample to work backwards with and to infer their "true" values from. So if you rerun these numbers with the sample instead of the population button depressed, you'll get more-valid statistics."

Q: This all seems like a lot of data, no?
A: It is and it isn’t. I wanted to provide an objective and somewhat more holistic perspective. That’s why I included everything that I did. For those who just want a quick glance at the consistency part, look at the highlighted column at the end of the table for coefficient of variation.

Q: Since the coefficient of variation is mean divided by the standard deviation, then why for D/STs with negative averages is their CV not negative? A negative divided by a positive is negative.
A: Good question. You are 100% correct. A negative divided by a positive is most definitely a negative. However, if the CV are entered as negatives, and then I sort from lowest to highest, the negative numbers would be incorrectly listed at the top of the consistency column.

Q: Where did you get all the stats from?
A: I used ESPN standard scoring for the D/ST. For everything else, I used .5 PPR scoring data from fantasydata.com

Q: Why did you choose purple and yellow for the table?
A: Kirktober is over, and he is nearly leading the league in Quarterback Rating. If November is anything like October, a certain internet holiday that takes place the entirety of November might be hard for me to maintain.

In response to ProofOfResearch's misleading article on NEO.

In response to ProofOfResearch's misleading article on NEO.
Yesterday, I was made aware of an article published by ProofOfResearch almost entirely based on a Reddit post that I had written a few months ago. About a month ago I was contacted by Randomshortdude (supposedly ProofOfResearch himself) asking for a permission to use the excerpts from the aforementioned post in his write-up about NEO. As an avid proponent of inclusivity and transparency, I gave a permission to use the contents of my post (the screenshots of the entire conversation will be added below), providing him with links to the Github repos and updating him on the fixes and improvements that have happened since the post had been published. Unknowingly, I continued to work on my projects while my post was being molded into a foundation for an entirely misleading and unfathomably unscientific article.
This post is going to consist of a list of excerpts from the article and the corresponding refutal for each of the listed excerpts.
"This is a semantic issue (example: $BTC having a 1 MB block size + 10 min block time limits TPS; no way around that) meaning that this is immutable"
Bitcoin doesn't have a 10 minute block time limit coded into the platform. The 10 minute average block production time is obtained via a difficulty adjustment formula that readjusts the difficulty of the underlying HashCash PoW algorithm every 2015 blocks (not 2016 due to a bug that was never fixed) based on the average block production time of the previous 2015 blocks.
"I’m not sure it’s even possible to change the digital signature of a protocol without a major hard fork, and there isn’t an alternative digital signature (that I think of), that would make this any more secure."
This excerpt is written in a reference to Point 2 of my Reddit post that criticizes the use of multisigs as a proof of the fact that a quorum (at least 2f + 1) replicas had signed the block hash. The use of multisig instead of signature batching via Schnorr's signatures doesn't affect the security of the nodes or the cryptographic standards used, however, the security of the network as a whole can be compromised due to the decreased number of full/light nodes operating increasing the likelihood of a spam attack being able to degrade the performance of the platform. Apart from that, a digital signature algorithm of the platform can be easily changed by adjusting the versioning of the block and transaction structures.
"Therefore, the consensus algo itself would need to be changed to amend this issue."
The consensus protocol works independently from the cryptographic standards of the platform, so a switch to a different elliptic curve or digital signature algorithm will have zero impact on the consensus algorithm.
"This, in itself, might be what stops $NEO from ever being able to truly scale."
While digital signature algorithms can vary in signing and verification speeds, the difference in the performance of the most popular signature schemes is small enough (except for BLS) to be considered to have a negligible impact on the efficiency of the consensus. As long the nodes are running on an efficient implementation, average network throughput is going continue to be the main bottleneck of the platform.
"Digital signatures are somewhat complex, but not incomprehensible if you really take the time to sit down and understand it. Once again though, it’s going to rely on an understanding of blockchain tech as well to know how this impacts the signing feature of a TX itself as well as pub key creation"
Digital signature algorithms play no role in public key creation as a public key is created simply by multiplying a 256-bit entropy (private key) by a generator (G).

A screenshot of a tweet used in the article.
Baffling. ed25519 DSA does not impact the efficiency of BFT and "blockchain" (whatever the hell that means in this context) as a result. Please also note that NEO does not use ed25519. NEO uses secp256r1 (as opposed to secp256k1 used by Bitcoin, which is a Koblitz curve) which is a NIST-recommended elliptic curve.
"Regular PoW algos are already designed to be Byzantine fault-tolerant already"
While being technically correct, the author dismisses the fact that BFT algorithms offer Byzantine fault-tolerance under rigid mathematical assumptions, in contrast to PoW algorithms which offer Byzantine fault-tolerance under probabilistic assumptions.
"Byzantine Fault Tolerance is not an issue though. It’s actually really useful but for private blockchains."
A common misconception about the use of BFT algorithms in "public" (the author meant permissioned/permission-less) blockchains. BFT algorithms are only required to retain the permissioned status during the agreement phase (meaning that the new candidates will have to wait until the next consensus round to be able to participate in the consensus) and can have a round robin algorithm implemented to select the next pool of validators.
"Of course, in a decentralized protocol — something like that is very hard to achieve."
The research paper quoted in the article examines the efficiency of Castro and Liskov's PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance) algorithm which is dissimilar from dBFT because PBFT doesn't require a primary change after every consensus round, which is impacts the performance in a decentralized network.
“At the other extreme, Hyperledger uses the classic PBFT protocol, which is communication bound: O(N²) where N is the number of nodes. PBFT can tolerate fewer than N/3 failures, and works in three phases in which nodes broadcast messages to each other. First, the pre-prepare phase selects a leader which chooses a value to commit. Next, the prepare phase broadcasts the value to be validated. Finally, the commit phase waits for more than two third of the nodes to confirm before announcing that the value is committed. PBFT has been shown to achieve liveness and safety properties in a partially asynchronous model [11], thus, unlike PoW, once the block is appended it is confirmed immediately. It can tolerate more failures than PoW (which is vulnerable to 25% attacks [26]). However, PBFT assumes that node identities are known, therefore it can only work in the permissioned settings. Additionally, the protocol is unlikely to be able to scale to the network size of Ethereum beacuse of its communication overhead.”
This statement will require a separate post to examine the real-world "permission-lessness" of PoW chains.
"NEO codebase is virtually abandoned."
neo-sharp? neo-go?
"This is purportedly in favor of $NEO 3.0, but there’s no GitHub for $NEO 3.0 (at least not any that I’ve found)"
https://github.com/neo-project/neo/pull/288.
"The idea of it being able to handle 1000 TPS has been thoroughly debunked and it is virtually impossible (probably entirely impossible) for $NEO to create a public blockchain based on DBFT (essentially POS+BFT semantically), that keeps the same encryption signatures (which are probably the only ones that will reliably serve the purpose of crypto where collision resistance must be all but a guarantee)."
dBFT cannot be equated to PoS + BFT as none of those are delegate-centered protocols. How was 1000 TPS thoroughly debunked? With the neo-sharp implementation and Akka being launched, I don't see a reason for dBFT to not be able to surpass 1,000 TPS during peak loads (not during sustained loads though). The excerpt about the collision resistance of "encryption signatures" (?) makes no sense to me.
Here are the promised screenshots of our conversation:

P.S. It is sad to see the so-called "researchers" attracting a mass following despite being clueless about the technology they are trying to review.

List of FAQs:

What is /millionairemakers, anyway?

Three years ago, a Redditor posted an idea in /Showerthoughts that speculated the fact, if a million people picked a certain Redditor and all donated just $1, they would have the power to make someone a millionaire.
This subreddit is an embodiment of that showerthought, and the monthly drawings are the attempts to make it happen.
We need your help to keep this running, which amounts to only $1 a month to make someone's day. In the long term, that’s $120 every decade, which is much more affordable than other expenses. How does it work? Below, you will find an explanation on entering, rules to keep in mind, the selection, and other important things to note.

What are the rules?

  • Only ONE top level comment per person (replies and subsequent-level comments aren't included), but feel free to reply to other comments. Making duplicate top level comments may result in exclusion from entering. Go to me to ensure you don't accidentally double comment.
  • If, by any chance, you do double comment, delete any extra duplicates ASAP, ideally before the thread is locked, as any chosen draws found to violate this will not be eligible to win, and will be banned from the subreddit.
  • Your account must be older than 30 days with some amount of activity. Throwaway accounts with very minimal activity will also not be eligible. This is to prevent multiple entries from the same person.

How will the winner be picked? What is the process?

  • After 24 hours following the submission of the thread, the thread will close, and the method of selection will begin.
  • While attempts to make the selection method similar to 2017’s have been performed, it still varies from the original. For an example from a prior drawing, see [Draw #36]. For archival purposes, please click here for the original selection method.
  • Method's TL;DR: Each comment is assigned a number by sorting the comments by old, starting with 1. The list of comments will be publicly released for the community to verify per their own accord.
There will be an official run at the time listed, and the list of comments will be released right before the [Drawing] takes place.
To find your comment, download the list, use Ctrl-F, and paste the comment in the search bar. You should find your comment deep inside of the list.
  • The Draw is held at 16:00 UTC the Sunday after the [Drawing Thread], unless stated otherwise. Using the Bitcoin blockchain, the third block yet to be mined will be used to select a winner.

What preparations should be made before paying the winner?

  • Take the time you have available now to setup your PayPal, or if you would like to use other services, Square Cash and a Google Pay account. (Note: Some services may not be available depending on where you reside.)
  • While not required, cryptocurrency wallets are also encouraged as another method of payment.
  • If you want to be reminded to donate, please comment "RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /millionairemakers" or click on the link in the TL;DR on the [Drawing Thread].

What else can I do to encourage participation?

  • Spread the word! The more people who participate, the better this gets for everyone! There has been a correlation between this subreddit making it in /all and an increase in donations.
  • Try to cross-post to relevant subs, and upvote. There is a correlation between reaching /all and the amount of donations for the winner. (Please don't spam other subs though. We're not trying to make any enemies here.)
  • Please try your best to donate a $1, no matter who wins. Every single dollar, cent, anything really counts, so please take the effort to remember and go through with it.

Miscellaneous:

  • Note about legality: This is NOT a lottery. You don't have to pay to enter. No prizes are given away directly by the moderators of this subreddit (the moderators will never even touch your donations; this is done voluntarily).
  • Additionally, according to the IRS, gift taxes are paid by the donor, and any donations under $15,000 is not taxable.
  • If you are under 18, please talk to your parents to get their consent to participate and use their help to setup a PayPal account.
  • If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask them in the comments. The rules regarding comments do not apply to /millionairemakersmeta.

Fellow Lumenatis: Can I get some feedback on our Stellar based gaming project?

For the entirety of my life, I have always loved video games. No matter how bad things got, I knew that I could always switch on my Xbox and be completely immersed in a different world. One where I felt like I was in control and that I actually mattered. It was a way for me to cope with a sometimes difficult reality while also bonding with people from all over the world.
Unfortunately, as many gamers know, there comes a time where you have to wrap up the controllers and go make a living. More often than not, you end up in the rat race dedicating a large portion of your life working a job you despise.
With the invention of blockchain technology, we saw an opportunity to completely shift the paradigm. For the first time ever, you could now create your own value system where people from all over the world could bond on a common set of values. Regardless of their nationality or governmental regime, anyone with an internet connection can now participate in this economic revolution.
So that's what were doing with Bbuck. We want every gamer around the world to know that what they do matters. That the effort they put into the digital world can now produce real, tangible value.
The State of the Industry
As it currently stands, only the top 1% of gamers are able to monetize their gaming efforts either from competition, sponsorship, or advertising. In an attempt to maintain value for their time, Gamers have created entire peer to peer economies from things like skins in CSGO. As users earn skins through the game Counter Strike Global offensive, they are able to transfer them over to third party sites and trade them with other players. Bbuck will provide a social currency that will serve as an alternative to the skin system that gamers are currently accustomed to. Bbuck will serve as a trading and reputation mechanism that can be applied across all video games regardless of the platform or genre. This has drastic improvements over the other value systems that games have developed for their users (skins, points, currencies, etc).
Simulated Mining
Value, as it has been represented in every currency ever created, is essentially a reward that's distributed by a greater societal structure. The more you contribute to that structure (going to work, creating a business, investing, etc.) the more of that reward you receive in compensation. Since mining is crucial to establishing value in a decentralized networks reward system (Bitcoin in the Bitcoin network, Ether in the Ethereum network, etc.) and since Stellar doesn't utilize mining to establish the Lumens value, Bbuck has created a way to simulate that process as a means of establishing value with its token. In traditional mining, all the computers that participate on the network are also the ones that lend their computing power to secure it. Simulated mining, on the other hand, leverages Stellars validators for processing secure transactions but still requires users to solve problems before being rewarded. The problems represented in this case are the synthetic (and highly addictive ones) that video games create. When gamers solve these conflicts (win the game), they receive a Bbuck in return. Of course in the gaming world, winning a match in a game like Mortal Kombat isn't the same as winning a match in Overwatch. To bridge this gap, we will create a standard for what it means to win a video game. We will do this by first only giving out Bbucks to gamers who win a game in the battle royale genre. The reason for this is because out of all the multiplayer video games in existence, Battle Royal games are the most difficult to win on a regular basis. Since the games are also played with the random assemblance of up to 100 people, it is ideal in ensuring a fair distribution of the tokens
Mining Allocation Algorithm
Similar to the federal open market committee, Bbuck will set the mining allocation rate (MAA) for every game that syncs with its platform. This implies a different mining rate for every game that is added on its platform. The primary factors that will go into determining this rate will be the genre of game, the time it takes to win in PvP, the amount of players involved, and several other factors.
Anchors
Anchors represent the video game title that will set the standard for the rest of the genre. Any other game in the genre can opt into the mining pool, but it won't be able to have a higher mining rate than the genres anchor. In order to set the initial standard of an anchor, the battle royal games of Fortnite, PUBG, and Rec room will be chosen. Once a user wins one of these games, starting with Fortnite, they will receive a Bbuck. In order to compensate the anchors for accessing their users wins and keeping the game fair, there will be a fee, similar to Ethereum's gas, that will be paid out to the developers of the game. This gas fee will vary in accordance to the number of users on the developers game as well as the difficulty of the game. While the developers will mine fractional shares of a Bbuck, gamers will always receive a full Bbuck in their account (assuming they’ve won a battle royal game). Because the value of the Bbucks are directly correlated with the difficulty of the game, anchoring games would be heavily incentivized to keep their games fair.
Branches
Branches encompass every other game that isn't an anchor. Branches will be any game that competes in the same genre (Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for instance). One of the benefits that branches would create for users is the possibility of mining Bbucks in games that gamers might be better at playing. For instance, gamers might not be as good at Street Fighter as they are Mortal Kombat but with branches, they will have the choice to mine from both. A complicated economic formula will be created to ensure that the mining allocation rate is fair. This formula will be developed by expert economists and mathematicians in the future iterations of Bbuck. For the time being, a basic formula for this would take into consideration the time it takes to win a branch game divided by the time it takes to win in the anchor game. Nearly every game in a genre will be chosen as a branch.
Utility driving features
Gamers will use Bbuck for 3 different reasons.
1.) Bet on themselves or others in games of skill
We will leverage the video games API key (most of which are public) in order to determine the winner of a match. Staked matches will only work when 2 players of a similar skill are registered users of Bbuck. We will facilitate a simple Stellar smart contract to facilitate a trustless trade between the two parties.
2.) Product redemption for gaming related product
Similar to how Chuck E. Cheeses uses tickets as a medium of exchange for a stuffed teddy bear, we plan on doing something similar. This would encourage at least a portion of our users to save of their tokens which would reduce the supply.
3.) Cash out to your local currency
Because buying your coffee the next morning is important.

If you made it this far in the post, then thanks for reading. Theres a lot more to this but these are the main value propositions of our platform. Were going to be launching out beta by April so Id love to collect any feedback you guys may have before we do!
P.S. We believe in eating our own dog food so we will not be doing an ICO. We are doing an equity crowdfunding round though so feel free to DM me if your interested in that.

PGA: No Frills DFS Data - Honda Classic Recap & Discussion of Golf Metrics

https://rotogrinders.com/blog-posts/pga-no-frills-dfs-data-honda-classic-recap-discussion-of-golf-metrics-2945909
So, this slate was fantastic.

I had a player pool of 22 guys and only 3 missed the cut with another as an MDF. While I only had 1 guy in the top 5 this time, it was one of my most exposed players in Lucas Glover. I had 3 more at T9 so 4 of the top 11 guys and a bunch more T20 or better. I didn't have any lineups packed with the top 5 so didn't have any huge individual scores but when most lineups went 6/6 or 5/6 with a bunch of T20 or better players, it's always going to be a very good week despite not hitting yahtzee.

Again, to recap, here was my player pool in order of exposure.

T30 Justin Thomas
T4 Lucas Glover
MDF Graeme McDowell
T9 Sergio Garcia
T59 Zach Johnson
T36 Daniel Berger
T16 Michael Thompson
T59 Vaughn Taylor
T36 Gary Woodland
T51 Russell Knox
CUT Adam Scott
T20 Chesson Hadley
CUT Luke List
T16 Billy Horschel
T20 Brian Stuard
T36 Byeong Hun An
CUT Cameron Smith
T36 J.T. Poston
T9 Jason Kokrak
T9 Jim Furyk
T20 Matt Wallace
T20 Talor Gooch

My model once again pushed Furyk (it tends to really like him, Chez Reavie and Phil Michelson) but this time it wasn't overboard about it. At the end I didn't use him in any of the purely model driven lines but ended up trusting the model when I created the "homer line" where I choose 1-2 guys I really want added in and exclude a few I'm already heavy on so I could jam in Adam Scott again and the lineup said fill it out with Furyk. Was pleasantly surprised with a T9 from the guy and it will give me a little bit more faith when the model recommends him.

Now back to Adam Scott, this is why I limit my ability to directly construct a lineup to only 1 dart. The only things in Scott's favor were course history, tout coverage and Vegas odds. Everything else said he's a fine golfer but way too overpriced and since my model works rather holistically, all those things were already accounted for so I already had a smittering of him out there. Yet I bought into the narrative and jammed him in there. I don't regret the decision, I'd do it again. But this is exactly why I build a model, because if I built my 10x gpp lineups by hand, I'd likely have gone with him in a lot more lineups because his narrative was very compelling. The other guys to miss the cut in Smith and List, well, I stand by those choices as well. Half the field needs to be cut, so even if everyone golfed the game of their lives you'd still get half the field get cut despite hitting peak form. Kind of like if everyone went to an Ivy League then we'd have Yale PhDs flipping burgers kind of scenario. In short, don't worry about it. Even the best golfers will miss the cut.

You may also recall the model was suggesting Ortiz and Blayne and I vetoed them because I didn't feel the data was reliable. They both missed the cut. I would have been about 1/3 exposed to each had I not manually sifted through and error checked my lineups, something I sometimes don't get a chance to do because I didn't start running the model until near lock. It would have been disastrous had I not seen those unfamiliar names and decided to take a closer look.

My cash games went exceedingly well as I chose one of my lineups that did fairly well to use in cash. I cashed in every 50/50 and double up (sometimes outright winning them) and won all but 2 of my h2hs. There's a good story here about why, despite that I play most of my volume in cash, that I go with only 1 lineup. There's one specific player I've been matching up with quite a bit. It started out in lower stakes and I believe he's now tilted and trying to recover because he keeps upping the stakes but I keep taking em. This past slate he posted a $100 h2h and I took it. He then matched up with me in another one for $5. He decided to go with 2 lineups, one of them performed pretty poorly, another would have done very well in a GPP. Given how pleased I am writing about this, I bet you can imagine which one of those I lost and which I won. This is why I just create one cash lineup and stick with it because I've been on his side of things in the past. If he wins both then it wouldn't matter, if he loses both then it wouldn't matter. If he loses the $5 wins the $100 it doesn't matter... but if he loses the $100 but wins the $5 then he goes on crazy monkey tilt.

It doesn't matter at all that mathematically speaking it doesn't make a difference (so long as both lineups had equal assumed expectations), emotions still run high in this and unless you're doing very high volume at leveled stakes (not 2 matchups of 20x difference in size) and not going to track the individual results but look at the big picture then it's fine. But nobody does this, we aren't androids, when you win you win, when you lose you lose. This is why although I put way more in cash than gpp and bad cash lineup can sink me, I'm still taking a binary approach with cash games. I'm not taking a 75% indifference with a 25% chance of losing my god damn mind because the h2h that mattered was the one that failed. Fail like a stoic with a single cash lineup that gives 100% indifference.

Now then, some people have been asking me to go into more detail about about the data that use to create the lineups. I'll just reiterate again that I'm never going to explain how the sausage is made. But I will be serving plenty of sausage and give you a general idea what animal it came from.

Today I'm going to talk about specifically how most of my research really demonstrates just how stupid most golf stats are. I really want to be 100% sure and am in the process of scraping an absurdly large database containing several decades. And since I'm doing this on my free time, it'll take some time before I parse and analyze everything. I don't want to make the very bold claims I already believe to true without further studying the matter and really ensuring my thoughts are real and it's not the product of bad calculations or insufficient sample size. But, what I've discovered thus far, is that all those stats are just window dressing. Saying someone led the field shots gained x is fundamentally no different than saying "they did well and had a good tournament." Things like shots gained track results not process. So it's much like tracking wins and rbis. Yes, the best hitters and the best pitchers in baseball often lead the league in those metrics, but we all know why they aren't good predictive tools.

For example, when my beloved Red Sox signed Dante Bichette in 2001, there was all this talk about him having led the major leagues in RBIs the past few seasons. He just had his epic year, two years ago driving in 133 runs and the year before got 90. While he was aging and slowing down, I distinctly remember a lot confusion over why we signed this elite hitter but then used him in a platoon. I'd be at Fenway and as the Red Sox lost, people would openly question the wisdom of having one of the best hitters in the game ride it out on the bench. This was 2 years before Moneyball was published and while front offices knew the reality of the situation (third team in 2 years and out of the league after that season), the average hard core Red Sox fan would just scratch their head wondering why we didn't give Dante a little more of a chance to show he still had it.

I feel this is the situation today with golf and golf statistics while what we have today is an improvement of the past - we take it for granted that it comes with the same authority as so wOBA or usage. We know that the winners won, but we don't know much else and shots gained is basically more or less a fancy way to say someone did a better job. If someone gets a birdie on a par 4, their SG will improve by about... drumroll please... 1. So you could just simply compare scores - IE look at end of tournament standings. Yes, there is definitely some nuance and they do factor in the relative difficulty of that specific par 4 and if I didn't feel like there was some actionable data out there I wouldn't bother with any of this. But I believe that way too much weight is put into this, whether I'm right or wrong, I will follow up on this in much more detail once it's no longer a hunch but rather indisputable. The reason why gathering this data is difficult is that it's restricted - which itself should be a bit of a red flag.

I'll also be reading "Every Shot Counts" soon, which is a book written by the creator of the Shots Gained metric. I really don't want to make any further and sweeping judgements until I read the author's long and detailed explanation of the metric.

But really, we can all see the smoking gun https://registrations.pgatourhq.com/forms/shotlinkintel/ for ourselves to see that the process by which they used to record shots gained is kept a secret and they don't disclose the data. Even prior to them ghosting us, access to the statistics themselves was restricted - you need to apply for access. The twitter account still exists and it's like everyone vanished into thin air, the last tweet https://twitter.com/ShotLink/status/893531791297978368 was well over a year ago and simply a picture of a golf course as if nothing was about the change.

Also, the PGA still insists "All strokes gained statistics are calculated using ShotLink, the PGA TOUR's real-time scoring system powered by CDW. https://www.pgatour.com/news/2016/05/31/strokes-gained-defined.html But since it's so secretive, we really don't know much about it. I'm not talking conspiracies or anything, they could have a very good data collection system that's phenomenal, but the very notion that the PGA doesn't even bother telling anyone how the data is collected and yet nobody is asking any questions should tell you this isn't exactly the most objective market.

So basically, I'm very confused by Shots Gained as a metric, can find very little information on it and what I can find is out of date and contradictory and seems to imply it's more or less no different than a nuanced version of looking at the final standings. I want to say it's bullshit, but I'm just reserving final judgement and simply labeling as sketchy for now.

So then we should look at results yeah? Yes, but this is largely what pricing is based upon, so not much of an edge there. So shall we look at ranking? Yes, let's take a look at OWGR.

When I first started with golf, I knew nothing and had nothing to base anything on other than seeing their pricing and recent point accumulations. Since Tiger Woods wasn't playing in that event, it was all entirely new names, just names I'd hear in passing while switching off ESPN as they were starting their golf coverage. So naturally, when I saw each golfer had a world ranking, I viewed that as a cheat sheet. From the very beginning, one of the formulas I've used to develop lineups was as simple as putting together the golfers within budget that collectively had the lowest aggregate world ranking number. Why am I suddenly speaking in such specifics you ask? Because it's a horrible DFS metric and nobody else is doing it (I track gpps lineups to see what others are doing, there are a few of these more simple formulas that pop up periodically, this is not one of them) so it's not exactly as if disclosing this information will make my opponents that much stronger.

My OWGR lineup has in fact been the single worst performing in cash and the 2nd to worst performing in gpps of the dozens of lineup models I have. Thankfully, I don't play it because it's so bad but I keep tracking it and recording how it would have performed just for fun these days. The only lineup that performed worse than the OWGR lineup in GPPS, well that one heavily factors in OWGR as well :). OWGR is just a terrible, terrible metric for DFS. Yes, it will give you the cream of the crop like the Dustin Johnsons, but you can never afford a lineup of Dustin Johnsons, you'll have to start digging deeper and pulling up min priced guys like Satoshi Kodaira - mr bitcoin himself. Someone who if you've been reading my stuff, is the entire reason I stopped playing any lineup that had OWGR as a primary indicator.

Now Satoshi, despite being a pretty horrible DFS play most of the time, is a great example of everything wrong with OWGR. His Fedex Cup rank is currently 160 and has never been better than 93, but his world rank is perplexingly 59. In 2018, he played 18 tournaments and finished under par only twice. He missed more cuts than he made as well. I could be mistaken, but it seems that he got into some majors via a sponsor in 2017 and 2018 and managed to do alright in them. He also ended up winning one of the tournaments he played in last year.

When researching OWGR to figure out how it came about and how it is calculated, I learned a lot. Basically, it's nothing more than party planning. A golf course in Scotland wanted to figure out whom to invite to compete in their tournament and invented the system. It weighs the strength of the field very heavily in rewarding points- and the strength of the field is - yup - you guessed it - determined by people already ranked by the system. So if Dustin Johnson cloned himself and kept playing tournaments exclusive to him and his equally ranked clones, they'd forever hold onto the top rankings. If OWGR was an excel sheet, the creator would get an error popup upon loading it up each day due to circular references. So, Satoshi I'm sure is a great golfer, anyone there should be, but his ranking is very artificially skewered up because he managed to make the cut and finish around 50th in some really packed majors that had a lot of heavy hitters. In fact, the ranking system is so completely absurd, that any millionaire can get themselves world ranked pretty easily. They just need to do something like sponsor a Pro-Am at some odd but counted tour like the Alps Tour and then invite the guys ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd to compete and filling out the rest of the field with toddlers and yourself. You would be assured a 4th place finish. Yet you didn't beat any of the top 3 golfers in the world. You just beat 100 toddlers. Yet you still get the high ranking because they get 45, 37 and 32 respective points for strength of field, which is greater than if you had a tournament of the golfers ranked 93rd through 200 playing. Finishing 4th behind the only 3 adults and beating 100 toddlers has the same impact as finishing 4th in a field of 107 of the greatest golfers in the world. http://www.owgr.com/about

Finishing 4th and beating 100 toddlers will grant you the same amount of points as finishing 20th at a major. That's how utterly stupid this rating system is. Obviously I'm using some extreme edge cases, it's very likely they would see through that scheme and not count it, but you get the idea of how inconsistent the system is. If you simply altered the PGA tour to the top 3 golfers and then a bunch of amateurs, those amateurs would soon arbitrarily be some of the highest rated in the world themselves, thus feeding itself.

This is why I call my OWGR model Ouroboros https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros

Dustin Johnson doesn't play defense. He isn't jumping out of the sand trap and blocking your approach shot. Him finishing in front of you has zero impact on how well you performed compared to him. Yet if you simply show up and play in enough events where he easily beats you, you'll end up with a solid world ranking. This is an absurd system. When I researched OWGR, I was simply shocked it was how some random guy created an invitation list for a tournament and because golf feels the need to be so full of tradition they just made that the official world rankings.

Don't get me wrong, the top OWGR guys are all very good DFS plays because they are winners. However, after a certain point you're not dealing with anything at all reliable. I'm not sure at which point it gets diluted, but after a certain point, that metric becomes just as unstable as Bitcoin. I find it very amusing that the indicator that showed me the flaws with OWGR after a certain stage is named Satoshi. I'm also fully aware of how difficult it is to quantify something so intangible as golf. However, there's no doubt in my mind that there must be a significantly better manner than what is currently used.

But, whether or not my hunch is right or wrong, we still have a system where the data is all secretly gathered and stored by the PGA. That's something everyone should be aware of as they set their lineups.

Good luck everyone. Will dive deeper into the shots gained after I get around to buying and reading the book and finally finish analyzing that data. I could very well come back here in two weeks apologizing for my ignorance that gave me the gall to question such genius. In the meantime, good luck grinding out there and I'll post again in a few days with my player pool for the next event.

Bitcoin uses very large numbers for its base point, prime modulo, and order. In fact, all practical applications of ECDSA use enormous values. The security of the algorithm relies on these values ... The Bitcoin network has a global block difficulty. Valid blocks must have a hash below this target. Mining pools also have a pool-specific share difficulty setting a lower limit for shares. How often does the network difficulty change? See target. What is the formula for difficulty? difficulty = difficulty_1_target / current_target Before we even begin to understand what bitcoin mining difficulty means, we need to know how mining works. We have covered this topic in detail before, so we will just give you a little overview before getting into the different nuances of difficulty. Following that, we will look at how mining difficulty is calculated and how it changes to suit the network’s needs. What is the formula for difficulty? difficulty = difficulty_1_target / current_target (target is a 256 bit number) difficulty_1_target can be different for various ways to measure difficulty. Traditionally, it represents a hash where the leading 32 bits are zero and the rest are one (this is known as "pool difficulty" or "pdiff"). The Bitcoin protocol represents targets as a custom floating ... The highest possible target (difficulty 1) is defined as 0x1d00ffff, which gives us a hex target of [code]0x00ffff * 2**(8*(0x1d - 3 ...
